September 10th, 2015 will go down in history as the day my life changed. I was invited to Fit University’s Back To School Fit Crawl – four free, unique workouts over the course of four weeks. The first was a BollyX workout, which I signed up for because I thought that it would be Zumba but with Bollywood music. I was very mistaken.

BACK TO SCHOOL FIT CRAWL

I got to the YMCA, got my swag bag of goodies, and started talking to Sarah (Fit University’s founder) about what the next hour would entail. She didn’t tell me much other than the fact that this was going to change my life.

I pretty much exclusively do Zumba so I thought this wouldn’t be too hard of a workout. Again, I was very mistaken. The class started out with the instructor, Fen Tung, warming us up to a popular Bollywood song. By the time the fifteen-minute warmup was done, I was ready to collapse. My shirt was already soaked in sweat by the time Fen announced that it was time to really get going.

The main difference between Zumba and BollyX is that the latter focuses more on choreography than just fitness. Don’t get me wrong – both are great, but BollyX absolutely feels more like dancing than Zumba does. Bollywood music is typically about romance and is very dramatic. I mean…If it’s not done big, is it even really Bollywood? Fen made that clear from the start – everything we did had to be big and dramatic. I caught a few glimpses of myself in the mirror in the front and let me tell you – I definitely had a big and dramatic smile on my face. By the end of the class, my cheeks hurt along with every other muscle in my body.

For the last song, we learned a ninety-second dance that we had to perform for each other after a couple quick rehearsals. The song was about a very attractive man – the rooster in the henhouse. We all referred to it as the rooster song and the best part was the number of rooster poses we got to do in those ninety seconds.

Who would I recommend this workout to? Everyone. Literally everyone. Tell your roommate, your boyfriend, your grandma…seriously. Take it from someone who doesn’t usually equate exercising with fun – this is hands down the most fun I’ve had working out. If you have an hour to spare, I would absolutely check it out.

The BollyX workout was a classic Fit University workout – super fun and best done with friends. I love that so many of Fit U’s workouts don’t feel tedious and this one was no different. It was fun and refreshing and a great twist to your everyday workout routine. The emphasis was really on getting up and getting active. As long as you’ve got functioning limbs, there’s no reason not to go to Fit University’s events. There’s no such thing as being too out of shape to go – take it from me.
